This post has been a long time coming! On Saturday April 16, the Aspen Mountain Rover Crew traveled to Antelope Island and hiked the Dooly Knob (Frary Peak) trail. We didn't make it all the way to Dooly Knob, but Candidate Alex made it about 1/3 of the way, and RSL Sarah and Rover Mate Lance made it more than halfway. We had a guest with us, the RSL's cousin Peter. There were spectacular views of the drying inland sea bed and the purple Wasatch Mountains to the east.
The RSL used her compass on one of the outcroppings to find the compass degrees for major landmarks that could be seen, such as the Bountiful Temple, the LDS Church granary, and Ogden Peak. There were ravens nesting along the trail, and we spotted meadow lark and a chucker. There aren't many trees on the island; most of them are in dry river gullies running down from the island peaks to the lake. It's mostly grasses and sagebrush.
After the hike we took a little drive down Antelope Drive and spotted a few groups of bison, which are conserved on Antelope Island.
Very beautiful and fun hike. I hope we return as a Crew in the future!
